Only recently I heard of the passing of Dr. William Chun-Hoon on October 1, 2019. Looking back over our relationship, I realized what a huge debt I owed to him.
East West Publishing Company published my first book Ying-Ying: Pieces of a Childhood” in 1982. Its representative contacted Dr. William Chun-Hoon, Principal at Castelar Elementary School. (He was appointed in January 1973 and was the first Chinese-American principal in the Los Angeles Unified School District). He authorized the purchase of a set of books for one of the classes and invited me to speak to the class a number of semesters thereafter.
One year he asked me to make a presentation of the book and related materials so he set up an assembly comprising of fourth and fifth grade teachers and classes.
Over the years, as my books rolled off the press, Dr. Chun-Hoon had me visit Castelar classes. After he retired, he introduced and persuaded his successor Principal Mr. Cheuk Choi to have me continue to speak to classes. He even offered to pick me up from the bus stop to facilitate transportation to one of these events.
In addition, Dr. Chun-Hoon arranged for me to meet the Los Angeles Public Library Teen Council for 3 of the books. It was often a gift from him to Teen Council members so that each could have their own copy.
Dr. Chun-Hoon had a smile that revealed a generous spirit and a warm, friendly humanity. He encouraged and supported me and my writing efforts. I owe him an unpayable debt. I am blessed to have been considered a friend and to have him as a loyal fan.
Thank you, Bill. Farewell and Rest in Peace,
Jeanne
