In the world of independent film sales, distribution and production, Robbie Little was one of its pre-eminent and most well-loved leaders. Articles written about him since his passing on May 4, 2018, list his many accomplishments (see links to 2 of them below). Here’s my perspective:
Having completed work as Production Coordinator on “Three of Hearts”, I was waiting for the next Carolco production to be greenlit. Meanwhile I was invited to meet with Robbie Little at his Overseas Filmgroup offices in the Carolco building on Sunset Boulevard. I was surprised when he introduced me to his staff as his new assistant. I said I could start right away but with the understanding that it may be for only a short time because I expected to join the crew on the next Carolco film in a few months. He said, “JJ, all I ask is that you get me through the AFM (American Film Market).”
Wouldn’t you know it? During the crunch of the first week of the AFM, Steve Lionetti, assistant to producer Buzz Feitshans, called to tell me the project was a “go”, and I was needed for pre-production the next day. I couldn’t accept, not after giving my word to Robbie; so, I reluctantly declined. When the film market was over, I told Robbie what had happened. He said, “I’ll make it up to you, JJ. I’ll give you job security. You won’t regret your decision.”
I won’t forget my snapshots of Robbie:
Sweet, caring; honest, diplomatic, funny
Hard-working; generous mentor to many
Loved films; working with Neo Motion Pictures (Joel Soisson, Mike Leahy)
Advocate for animals; vegetarian/vegan; hot tea
Embraced technology, innovative acquisitions program
Conducting staff and creative meetings
Travel—markets and festivals
Enthusiastic sports fan: L.A. Clippers; Liverpool football (soccer)
He was right--I never regretted working for Robbie. He was a wonderful boss and a great human being. My ten years working with him and his wife Ellen (Overseas Filmgroup/First Look Media partner and co-President of The Little Film Company) were a blessing. Someday I’ll write a book about our adventures. Thank you, Robbie.
