YING-YING: PIECES OF A CHILDHOOD
A child’s special window in the Chicago flat she shares with her mother reflects her dreams, joys, pains and fears. Through the window she recaptures unforgettable experiences--the fear of being left alone, the mystery of a gambling place, the joy of performing, the pain of parental discord. It is a personal reminiscence of Ying-Ying, a sensitive Chinese-American girl, that will bring tears of recognition to anyone who has been young.
YING-YING 2: JASMINE BY THE BAY
Eight-year old Jasmine, whose Chinese name is Ying-Ying, leaves Chicago with her mother to live in San Francisco where she learns about family, teasing, friendship, being in charge of her nephew, trouble at summer camp, the violin, appreciating teachers, and her mother's wisdom
YING-YING 3: JASMINE BLOSSOMS IN L.A.
When nine-year old Ying-Ying (Jasmine) and her mother move to Los Angeles, her father‘s shadow follows. Jasmine discovers unexpected consequences as she gets to know her older brother Art, makes new friends, joins the L.A. Junior Fire Department, breaks one of her mother’s rules, competes in sports and in Chinese school, deals with a hostile teacher, wonders about her mother’s suitor, and finds out about superstitions and faith.
YING-YING 4: JASMINE RETURNS TO THE BAY
Back in San Francisco, eleven-year-old Jasmine (Ying-Ying) saves her mother who has a bad accident, enters the workforce, competes in a spelling bee, has a crush on a boy that brings on secret dreams as a super hero, participates in Chinese traditions, experiences earthshaking events, and struggles to be a normal teenager before graduating high school at seventeen.
WIND CHIMES
Hai-lan, orphaned at age nine, leaves her village in China to live with her maternal aunt and uncle in Macao. She falls in love with a mysterious Chinese-Portuguese boy; but at age 16 her education is cut off abruptly, and she is whisked off to America to fulfill an arranged marriage. Hai-lan painfully but quickly adjusts to her mother-in-law's tyranny and her new responsibility of raising her husband's nine siblings. She struggles to become independent as she weaves through an obstacle course of tradition and culture both Chinese and American. She discovers a special relationship with the spiritual world.
